Chicagoans are Most Likely to Get in a Car Accident from Following too Closely

Chicago drivers experienced 9,400 crashes so far in 2019 -- about half of the number of crashes compared to this time last year, according to data from the City of Chicago. But according to traffic data from an outside firm released this month, traffic in Chicago is getting worse.

Chicago now has the third-worst traffic in the U.S., according to a study by transportation data firm INRIX. That means Chicago's less congested than Boston and Washington, D.C., but more congested than New York and Los Angeles.

The City of Chicago puts its traffic crash data on its open data portal. Take a deeper look at the data below.

Most Crashes' Causes are Unknown

The city also reports the location of each traffic crash, along with each crash's estimated damage, cause, weather and time of day. Not surprisingly, most crashes occur during rush hour. The below map shows all crashes since Jan. 1, 2019. Use the slider to see where crashes occur based on the hour of the day.
